Modern Professional Fonts: Montserrat + Open Sans
If the Classic Editorial pairing is a broadsheet, Modern Professional is a well-designed SaaS app — clean, purposeful, instantly readable. Montserrat and Open Sans are two of the most popular fonts in the world, and their pairing works because they share geometric DNA while remaining distinct enough to create hierarchy.
This is the pairing to reach for when you want the typography to get out of the way and let the content do the work.
The Pairing
Heading font: Montserrat
- Style: Geometric sans-serif with strong vertical axis and uniform stroke weight
- Character: Contemporary, confident, approachable
- Best weights: ExtraBold (800) or Bold (700) for titles, SemiBold (600) for subheadings
Body font: Open Sans
- Style: Humanist sans-serif with slightly wider letterforms and open apertures
- Character: Friendly, neutral, designed for screen legibility
- Best weights: Regular (400) for body, Bold (700) for emphasis and labels
Visual Hierarchy Example
HEADLINE 40pt Montserrat ExtraBold
─────────────────────────────────────────
Subheading 22pt Montserrat SemiBold
Body text at 16pt Open Sans Regular reads smoothly
across all slide sizes and screen types.
LABEL: 13pt Open Sans Bold
When to Use It
- Corporate presentations of any kind — The pairing works across industries and contexts
- Technology companies — Especially B2B SaaS, enterprise tech, data platforms
- Startup decks — Modern without feeling trendy; it won't date
- Internal communications — All-hands, company updates, HR materials
- Product presentations — Clean type that won't compete with product visuals
This is arguably the most versatile font pairing in the library. When in doubt, Modern Professional is a safe and excellent default.
Typography Rules for This Pairing
Use Montserrat weight contrast aggressively. The difference between ExtraBold and SemiBold creates clear hierarchy in headlines. Don't use Regular-weight Montserrat in headings — it loses the structural clarity that makes this pairing distinctive.
Open Sans for everything below the headline. Don't use Montserrat for body copy — it's designed for display use and tires the eye at paragraph length.
Letter-spacing on Montserrat ALL CAPS. If you use all-caps labels or section headers in Montserrat, add 0.1–0.15em tracking. The geometric letters need room to breathe.
Don't over-weight Open Sans. In body copy, stick to Regular with bold for isolated emphasis. Using SemiBold for body text reduces the contrast with labels and subheadings.
Pairing with Color Schemes
Modern Professional is flexible enough to pair with any scheme:
- Corporate Trust — The default choice; clean blue + clean type
- Innovation Purple — Geometric Montserrat feels at home in tech contexts
- Elegant Neutral — When you want maximum restraint and legibility
